Weekender Projects: "Steel Away and Genesis"

This is the boat we have been working on since December 17th, 1999.  Genesis and Steel Away are of the Weekender design by Peter and Mike Stevenson.  They are 19' 6" gaff rigged sloops based on the Friendship sloop design of the turn of the century.  Fortunately Mike Donlin stopped over one day during the first few days of construction and was so enamored by the design that he decided to build one as well.  We have pretty much spent the last few months holed up in our respective garages cutting and re-cutting, calling........and then re-measuring and cutting again.

Below are a few fine examples of the Weekender design.

This is the Weekender of  Zeljko Pinjusic of Norway.

Vince Thorburn's Weekender "Harmony". A fine example of the Weekender design.

Jennifer's sister Renae suggested the name Genesis......after many hours of discussion!  We shall leave it at that.  I love the name and think it is a fitting as a name could be for a project of this kind.  Mike and Nan, Mike, being a steel designer and welder have decided to name their boat "Steel Away".  For one feeling as out of his element (wood not steel) as Mike must feel (how do you ground these screws so they can be welded) they have done a superb job!
